Skipper's Minute, March 2008 Mr. Pat ("Peaches") Rogers, Skipper, SSS195 In February, your Sea Scouts delivered nearly $700 worth of camping supplies to two Scouting families who lost everything in the recent mountain fires. Then, under the direction of Mate Adrian Testa-Avila, they presented the colors at the Squadron Change of Watch. Sea Scout Eurasia Lopez has completed for first course as a Trainer for "Leave No Trace" (low-impact camping), so expect a quick reprimand if you should cross her teachings! The Paddlers' Cruise will be starting the first weekend of April and will continue through the 11th. At the end of April is the Venturing Leadership Skills Course at Camp Emerson in Idyllwild, and the Ship will be participating in this weekend of training and fun. On the weekend of May 16-18 the Ship intends to join the Vessel Safety Examiners at Silverwood Lake SRA with camping, canoeing, and kayaking, as well as assisting the Examiners at the launch ramp as they kick off Safe Boating Week. Come out and join us - always a smile in our campsite!
Skipper's Minute, January 2008 Mr. Pat ("Peaches") Rogers, Skipper, SSS195 We
in the Sea Scouts have much to be grateful for this year. We have
a great support group in Arrowhead and we are so very lucky to have
found you. We have been doing our fundraising at Sport Chalet and
will be able to keep the boats afloat for another year. We sung
the praises of Sea Scouting and Arrowhead all day for two days. It
was a surprise to me how many folks did not know about Sea Scouts.
We met some very great people.
We are looking forward to the new year and the Paddlers' Cruises.
We will be recruiting and trying to grow just as the Squadron will.
We are hoping to have our boat ready for the Sail Races. We have
many New Year's resolutions... but most of all, we are grateful for
those who keep us going. To everyone in Sea Scout Ship Changing
Tides and the fantastic Arrowheads that help us learn - Happy New
Year!
Skipper's Minute, December 2007 Mr. Pat ("Peaches") Rogers, Skipper, SSS195 In the aftermath of the terrible fires that raged through the San Bernardino mountains the Ship looked for ways to help those in need. We have joined with a number of other Scouting Units to plan for the rebuilding and cleanup efforts. ...Mr. Adrian and Bryan went up with several other Scouts & Scouters from other Troops/ Crews to help the Red Cross. After a day's labor it was decided that further work teams should wait until the insurance companies and local officials deem it okay to clear away the rubble. ...We are still awaiting word as to how many Cub Scout, Boy Scout or Venturers and their families lost their homes. They will be a priority for help [from] your Sea Scouts. It's charter renewal time again so your Sea Scout adults are buried in the annual paperwork required to operate a Scouting Unit. Adults and youth assigned to positions, fees and insurance paid, signatures obtained and all "t's" crossed and "i's" dotted before the end of the Scouting year. We are again looking forward to the holiday gift wrapping at Sport Chalet Redlands, on December 22&23 (Saturday and Sunday). We will be wrapping gifts starting at 1000 [hours] until...? This year Eurasia gets to try her hand wrapping without a cast!
Skipper's Minute, November 2007 Mr. Pat ("Peaches") Rogers, Skipper, SSS195 First, helping at the Sheriff's Rodeo & Scout Stampede, Sea Scout Eurasia along with Paula Boothe, Mark Van Bibber, "Peaches" and a long-time friend and members of the Ship's Committee, Ken Reese, joined 2 members of the BSA's High Adventure Team, "Trailer Bill," and a dedicated squad of ROTC kids to give out safe boating information, fit PFDs, give basic canoeing instructions and help launch and retrieve 1 canoes all day Saturday [Sept. 29]. The line for canoes was the shortest ever at this annual event that saw over a thousand kids and adults paddling around the lake at San Bernardino County's Glen Helen Regional Park... Next came the Inland Empire Dutch Oven Society's "Puppy" - a hands-on class for kinds on how to cook with cast iron dutch ovens. Eurasia and Aaron, Shelly and Mark, Richard Boothe and Peaches manned a station on dutch oven deserts. They taught 4 groups totaling 40+ students how to make a simple lemon/pineapple desert in a dutch oven and eat what they cooked! We also had the only station with a handwashing facility. A BIG thanks to Aaron for keeping it stocked with clean wash and rinse water and keeping a good set of hot coals for the ovens during the entire day. Eurasia & Shelly were the cooking instructors with their hands full with up to 11 students at a time. Since the start of the school year, the Thursday night Ship meetings at the gun club have not been working out for us as there are conflicting schedules with the youth. We are in the process of finding a new location and meeting day that will satisfy all the Sea Scouts. The gun club continues to store our small flotilla of sailboats... On our calendar for the upcoming holidays is the Christmas Gift wrapping at the Redlands Sport Chalet on Saturday and Sunday, 12/22 & 23, from 10am 'till...???
Skipper's Minute, October 2007 Mr. Pat ("Peaches") Rogers, Skipper, SSS195 Another exciting month has come and gone and your Sea Scouts have been their usual busy selves. Sea Scouts manned the Vests for Life booth at Lake Perris over the Labor Day weekend and tried to get in an afternoon of sailing too. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate. The area had high wind storms as well as lightning the day they brought out Running Tide to sail. We even had a visit from Moto-Guzzi Cal (without donuts!). Waiting until the last minute, they repainted Bear Dog and then voted to rename it in memory of Dana McRae. Dana was the National Liaison Officer between Sea Scouting and the USPS, the driving force behind White Shark [SSS1371] (Long Beach Area Council's prominent Sea Scout Ship) and the best friend any Sea Scout ever had. He could be gruff and abrupt with a Squadron member or Scouter but never with "his kids," the Sea Scouts. He will be truly missed. In every race your Sea Scouts entered at Lake Lopez they carried a PFD labeled "SS DANA," as he was listed as a member of the Changing Tides racing crew.
Skipper's Minute, September 2007 Mr. Pat ("Peaches") Rogers, Skipper, SSS195 At this month's Ship meeting we set our calendar for the rest of the year. We're also set to add to the Ship's Company. Some new recruits are set to join us later this month... Our upcoming activities include: The Cardboard Boat Regatta at Lake Lopez, Vests for Life at Lake Perris on Labor Day weekend, volunteering to crew on the Squadron's Sail Race, a Dutch Oven Society "Puppy" at Featherly Park, a Red Cross First Aid and CPR class in October, and Christmas Gift Wrapping in December. A full schedule for our Sea Scouts!
Skipper's Minute, July 2007 Mr. Pat ("Peaches") Rogers, Skipper, SSS195 Your Sea Scouts are still staying busy even if school is out for a few weeks. In May the Ship attended the Log Bending at Puddingstone Reservoir, bringing along one of their own sailboats. As usual, the "Blind Dingy Race" was a hit with the Scouts and adults that participated, as well as the other games, the great food, and fellowship that goes along with any gathering of our Squadron. The Scouts have been busy cleaning their small flotilla and doing another fundraising snack bar at the horse show in San Dimas as well as attending a Venturing Leadership Skills Course at Boy Scout Camp Emerson in Idyllwild. They are now preparing to test for Seamanship in Mike Mann's Class. Oh, and don't forget "Vests for Life" at Lake Perris!
